The Ellis County
RACES group currently has a spotter network of about 35 people
who participate in Skywarn. Skywarn is the National Weather Service program of trained
volunteer severe weather spotters. Skywarn volunteers support their local community and
government by donating their time, equipment and vehicles to provide the NWS with accurate
severe weather reports. These reports, in combination with modern Radar and Nexrad, are
used to inform communities of the proper actions to take as severe weather threatens. The
key focus of the Skywarn program is to save lives and property through the use of the
observations and reports of trained volunteers. (Gropper 1993)
Ellis County R.A.C.E.S. Training Nets are held the first Thursday of
every month at 7:30 pm on the 2 meter repeater.
